When someone is terminally ill, there are many issues to be addressed. For example, the clinical aspects of terminal care; the ethics around whether to treat or not to treat; most importantly, encouraging independence. These issues need to be looked at in detail alongside offering choices, protecting quality of life, caring for the whole person, and providing palliative care in a residential home or in their own home. The provision of holistic, person – centred care provides quality of life for the person concerned which should also address the fact that we all have spiritual needs and that these are different to religious needs. The course also covers the social and psychological factors that affect the client’s family or friends with regards to personal experiences of death and bereavement.
